Wave Terminal
An open-source, cross-platform terminal that combines terminal sessions with file previews, a built-in editor, a web browser and Wave AI, an assistant that can read terminal output and files.
About Wave Terminal
Command-line work is spread across terminal tabs, SSH sessions, editors and browser windows, and an AI assistant usually cannot see any of that context.
Who it’s for
- Developers and operators who work across many SSH servers and want remote files, editing and terminals in one window
- Terminal users who want an AI assistant that can read terminal output and, with approval, read and write files, using local models or their own API keys
When to consider it
Consider Wave Terminal when you want a free Apache-2.0 terminal for macOS, Linux and Windows that keeps data locally without an account and lets you choose between Wave's AI service, local models or your own API keys.
Tradeoffs & limitations
- Wave's default AI service proxies requests through Wave Cloud using OpenAI's APIs, is in beta with included AI credits, and normally requires telemetry to be enabled; to avoid that you must configure a local model or your own API key as the default mode.
- Wave AI cannot yet read files on SSH-connected machines or run terminal commands; both are listed as coming soon.
