LiteLLM
A Python SDK and proxy server for accessing multiple model providers through a common interface.
About LiteLLM
Multiple applications and model providers can leave a team maintaining duplicated integration, routing and operational configuration.
Who it’s for
- Teams connecting applications to multiple model providers
- Developers evaluating a shared model gateway
When to consider it
Consider the SDK for application-level integration and the proxy when several clients need a shared access layer. Choose the deployment shape before comparing feature lists. A gateway is most useful when there is a concrete coordination problem to solve.
Tradeoffs & limitations
- Running a proxy introduces another service to deploy and monitor.
- A common API does not make every provider feature interchangeable.
- Verify licensing and feature availability for the edition you deploy; source snapshots are not current commercial terms.
A useful first evaluation
Test two providers against the same small workload. Exercise an unavailable provider, request timeout and unsupported parameter. Record the fallback behavior and total cost of the deployment, including operations, before treating routing as a saving.
