THE SOTA FIELD GUIDE

AI products that were renamed, acquired or shut down: what we tracked in 2026

Renames, acquisitions, pivots and shutdowns we found while maintaining a catalog of AI products, with sources.

By SOTA · Updated 2026-10-02 · Researched with AI assistance; facts checked against the linked sources · How we work

The short answer

AI products change fast. While keeping SOTA's catalog current in 2026 we recorded 24 renames, acquisitions, pivots and shutdowns, from Sora and ChatGPT Atlas closing to Windsurf becoming Devin Desktop and Le Chat becoming Vibe. If you depend on an AI product, check its name, owner and plans at least every quarter; if you build one, redirect old URLs and say clearly what changed.

How we tracked these

SOTA lists more than 250 AI products, and every addition is checked against the product's official pages. Each change below came up during that work and is linked to a source. Several more products in our catalog were renamed without a public announcement we could cite, so they are not in the table.

Shutdowns

Even products from the largest labs can close quickly. OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experience in April 2026 and its API in September 2026, and shut down the ChatGPT Atlas browser in August 2026 after announcing plans to combine it with the ChatGPT desktop app and Codex. Roo Code shut down its VS Code extension in May 2026 to focus on a cloud agent. Khoj shut down its hosted cloud on April 15, 2026; the open-source app still runs if you host it yourself.

If a tool you rely on closes, the cost is in migration: exported data, rewritten workflows and retrained habits. Prefer tools that let you export your data in standard formats.

Acquisitions

Developer infrastructure consolidated quickly. Tricentis bought Tabnine, Anaconda bought Kilo Code, ClickHouse bought Langfuse, Cloudflare bought Replicate, Cursor bought Continue, ClickHouse also bought LibreChat, Workday bought Flowise, Jina AI joined Elastic and OpenAI announced a deal for Promptfoo. In most cases the product kept running and open-source code stayed available, but pricing and roadmaps can change after a deal, so watch the announcements of tools you depend on.

Renames, moves and pivots

Renames are common and often unannounced in search results. In 2026 Cognition renamed Windsurf to Devin Desktop, Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe, Freepik renamed itself Magnific, and Google's Vertex AI became Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Azure AI Foundry became Microsoft Foundry and Grammarly renamed its company Superhuman. Open-source projects move too: goose moved from Block to the Agentic AI Foundation.

Some products keep their name but change what they are. Hume AI, known for expressive voice models, now presents itself as human evaluation and data for voice AI. When a product's homepage no longer describes what you signed up for, check whether the part you use is still supported.

For builders, the lesson is in our SEO basics guide: redirect every old URL permanently and keep the old name on your site for a while, because people and AI assistants keep using it.

Free plans that changed

Free tiers are not permanent. Qwen Code's free Qwen OAuth tier ended on April 15, 2026, so users now need an API key or a paid coding plan. Check free-plan terms again before you build a workflow on them.
